A Teesdale-based voiceover artist has won a part in next year’s London Olympics.

Former radio presenter Emma Hignett is already heard on the capital’s buses telling passengers when to alight, and has recently been back in the studio recording the new bus stops for the Olympics.

Emma Hignett Voiceovers, based in Staindrop, won the contract to supply more than 30,000 announcements for 700 London bus stops in 2006.

The nine-year contract involves her recording announcements around three times a year as new stops and routes are introduced.

Her latest recording saw her saying: “alight here for the Olympic Stadium.”

Mrs Hignett, 41, said: “I am proud of the bus project. It is amazing to realise seven million people are listening to you every day.”

Other recent work has included a project for international payment agent Visa in the US, which saw her provide 7,000 different options for the firm’s telephone network.

Mrs Hignett, who has a two year-old son, Thomas, said that the increase in automated systems and announcements makes it a good time for businesses like hers.

She has a recording studio at home, and also works out of Barnard Castle’s NeST Business and Community Hub.

“It makes me proud that I can do this from home, then run down to the nursery to pick up my son,” she said.
