Thirsk Tradesman’s Association: In respect to the instructions of a previous meeting, when it was agreed to ask the NE Railway Company for an improvement in the motor bus service to the town, and, particularly to run a bus at 8.30am from the town to the station, the secretary reported that he had a dozen forms printed on which to receive the signatures of those who favour a petition being presented to the company. One had been left at each of the three banks, and one each at nine of the principal shops in the town. He was pleased to say that Mr Tennant, of the York City and County Bank, had secured 51 signatures up to that morning, Mr Thrippleton 25, and Mr Griffiths 15.

The new £1m Leeming bypass came into operation officially on Saturday without any fuss or ceremony, and now traffic has a clear run through the greater part of the Great North Road in the North Riding. The northbound carriageway had been in use for some time but the use of both carriageways speeded up the traffic and brought a strange quiet to the bypassed villages of Leeming Bar, Leeming and Londonderry. Apart from relieving road congestion, the new carriageways should reduce considerably the accident dangers which were present on the old North Road, where Leeming Garth was one of the notorious black spots. The three and a half mile bypass was completed 19 months after work began, and was carried out by direct labour of the North Riding County Council.
