ARMY Cadet Force (ACF) detachments have launched an appeal for adult volunteers to support North Yorkshire’s 1,500 cadets.

The force said its instructors are struggling to keep up with demand from youngsters who want to develop skills, experience adventure training, such as whitewater rafting and rock climbing and projects, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The Northallerton cadet detachment is one of five in North Yorkshire, including Stokesley, Richmond, Thirsk and Ripon, needing support to ensure the cadets from the surrounding area can continue to take part in weekend camps, adventure training and parades, in addition to earning qualifications.

Colonel Malcolm Render MBE, commandant for Yorkshire North and West Army Cadet Force, said adult volunteers did not need any military experience and could gain qualifications that would help them in their work.

In a recent survey by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association in Yorkshire and the Humber, it was found 100 per cent of current ACF adult instructors would recommend the role to others.

Cadet Stephanie Gosling, 14, of the Northallerton detachment who attends Northallerton College, said: “I love every minute of being a cadet.

“The whole unit can only exist if we continue to have enough adult volunteers. Without them it will be a struggle to provide high quality training and opportunities for other cadets like me.”
