Sir, – I can’t miss this opportunity to try to put to rest a silly myth about the method of painting used by the Alderson sisters, as perpetuated in your report of the recent sale of their artwork at Thomas Watson’s saleroom.
They didn’t paint one side each and meet in the middle.
Another silly myth is that one of the twins painted the background and the other foreground.
Neither story is true. How do I know? I asked them of course. Whichever twin I asked answered, “Oh no. I start a picture and when I get sick of it I pass it over to her and she does a little bit of it”.
Charmingly put and makes perfect sense to me.
