Sir, - My GP recently referred me to the audiology department of the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, and I saw the audiologist on March 11, when all the necessary tests were carried out and a hearing aid ordered.
I was informed it would take approximately six months for it to be supplied.
I was very unhappy about this long delay, but felt I had no choice but to accept it, since to opt for a private supplier would cost at least £1,500.
I mentioned this to a neighbour yesterday, and he was amazed, since he saw the audiologist at Darlington Memorial Hospital after a wait of about one month and got his aid about three weeks after the consultation.
In view of this discrepancy, I contacted the Friarage and, to my astonishment, I was informed the six-month waiting time was correct because the Yorkshire primary care trust cannot release the money any quicker.
The PCT covering the Darlington Hospital obviously manages its affairs differently.
This is another example of the post code lottery which seems to prevail in this country.
I would point out that in two weeks' time I will be 86 years old, and six months may be a big part of my remaining time on this earth.
Presumably, the PCT is hoping that I will die in the meantime and save it money. Is there really nothing that can be done to sort this matter out?
