Sir, - I write as an ordinary Northallerton resident who depends on the services organised and provided by Hambleton District Council.

It seems to me that there is a faint whiff of hysteria over the proposal to charge for parking in this area. We are told that it will affect businesses and tourism but I feel that the case has been overstated.

As long as there are supermarkets, twice-weekly markets as well as shops that sell niche products, then people will continue to do their shopping in the town.

For those who work here and who might be affected by daily parking charges - then they could be provided with yearly parking permits at a reduced cost. This option is available across the border in Richmondshire where the parking permit allows parking at all the district council car parks.

As for tourism, we spend our holidays in the UK. I cannot remember the last time we went to a town where parking was free. The amount we have to pay certainly does not affect where we go or what we see. We expect to pay and I feel sure that visitors to our town would do the same.

Services that the district council provide have to be paid for in one way or another. We cannot have first-class services for free. Perhaps those who are so against parking charges can suggest alternative ways to raise the money needed or, better still, offer themselves for election.

To be a Hambleton District councillor at this time must be a thankless task.
