Sir, – I must admit I had a snigger last week at your front page article entitled “And the unitary authority will be called..”

It explained that after “extensive consultation” involving 700 people and a public meeting no less, the decision was made to rename Durham County Council ... um ... Durham County Council. Alternatives included County Durham Council, Durham Council, Durham Unitary Council and County Durham Unitary Council.

I found this farcical exercise reminiscent of a scene in the classic film Life of Brian in which the “People’s front of Judea” discuss their rivals “The Judean People’s Front” and “The Judean Popular People’s Front”.

Unfortunately, the actions of the council are not an amusing incident written by the Monty Python team, but a snapshot of their ethos and what the people of Durham have to put up with.

I suppose, in their defence, it must be very difficult trying to name something that no one wants. The theory must be “keep the name the same and hopefully no one will notice”.

Come on everybody, altogether now ... “Always look on the bright side of life”.
