Sir, – Mr Cameron, talking to Andrew Marr on Sunday, accused and condemned Gordon Brown for trying to buy a byelection.

Readers may find this surprising.

On Richmondshire District Council, all six Independents who became Tories are now in positions of responsibility.

William Hague MP was asked to intervene and to help restore the electorate’s faith in democracy, but he refused, obviously believing that he and his Tory cronies know best.

In Richmondshire, the last elections returned a “no overall control” council but Coun Steckles and Mr Hague could not accept that and the local Tory group set out to subvert the voters’ decision.

Double standards? This is proof, if proof were needed, that the Conservatives cannot be trusted to run this country and respect the wishes of the electorate. They are the same as they were 11 years ago when they were kicked out after years of incompetence.

Mr Cameron and his party are guilty of double standards.

STUART PARSONS Newbiggin, Richmond.
