Sir, – I refer to P Johnson’s letter (D&S, April 10) regarding proposals for a car park etc at Osmotherley and have some sympathy with his views on the manner in which the proposals have been presented.

However, I believe that Coun Swales is making a genuine and well-intentioned attempt to address three of the “top priority”, and most difficult, actions identified in the recent Osmotherley Area Parish Plan.

These actions include “vigorously pursue the purchase of land for a car park; identify sites [for] affordable housing; seek better sports facilities [and] explore sites nearer to the centre of the village”.

The parish plan was prepared by villagers, was the subject of very detailed and extensive consultation, and the conclusions were adopted by the parish council.

Coun Swales’ proposals may or may not be the best way forward, but they do seek to resolve serious problems for the village. As such they are worth exploring in more detail, and it is important that the public are fully involved in developing any scheme and consulted before a decision is made.

I believe this consultation process is what Coun Swales was aiming to start at the recent public meeting.

It would certainly be a significant development for our village, but that does not mean it should be dismissed. Many villages have achieved similar projects, to their great benefit.

HUGH THOMPSON Osmotherley.
