Sir, – The green shirts billow in the wind, fanned by the ever turning blades and government grants. Sadly though, there is no free electricity and at best only two per cent of UK’s requirement will be provided, assuming a constant wind velocity.
The whole deal is based on an expensive fallacy when, in fact, due to previous and present administrations proving to be coy about the provision of new power stations, we will be a third short in a few years’ time.
Conventional power stations take three to five years to build and nuclear 17-20 years. UK output will drop from present 62gw to 30gw. This will cause major economic and social problems.
Priority users, hospitals, railways, town centres will be largely unaffected, but domestic users will experience severe cuts on a daily basis for a considerable number of years. This will bear unfairly on the elderly and infirm who are dependent on electricity for all their needs.
The solution is quite simple, we must all reduce our requirements by half. No more ceiling lights a many, when a prudent longlife bulb will have to suffice.
The goods news is that all our electricity bills will be reduced as there will simply be insufficient supply to meet demand.
WILLIAM ROBOTHAM The Old Vicarage, Barton
