Sir, – The plan being discussed by Darlington Labour Cabinet to develop Beaumont Street and Feetham’s car park totally ignores the parking needs of the customers of existing traders, sporting facilities and churches.

We are told (D&S, Sept 30) a “report recommends the development of these car parks" – but who was consulted?

Surely before the report was produced letters should have been sent to every shop owner to make them aware the Labour Council is intending to sell all existing town centre car parks which will inevitably affect their future trade.

Instead of building on car parks, the controlling Labour Group must review its car parking policy – reducing all charges – allowing a level playing field with the 11 out-oftown supermarkets.

To service the town’s £100m debt (incurred by their mismanagement) the Labour Cabinet is no longer interested in the trader’s welfare, instead they have become property developers of the town’s heritage.

When all the "family silver" has gone, the Labour Cabinet – from its lofty Town Hall office – will eventually spot that the town square is an empty lot.

How long before this last piece of our history goes on the market at a give-away price to service the town’s debt?

JEAN JONES Darlington.
