Sir, – I cannot understand the fuss being made by Michael Sharpe (D&S, Sept 30) and others concerning the transfer of responsibility for play areas from Richmondshire District Council to local councils.
Parish councils have traditionally had responsibility for greens and common land. Play areas are merely an extension of this function. Contributions from builders and capital grants for land and play equipment will continue to be desirable.
However, it is plainly less costly for the local community to inspect the equipment regularly – no travel costs or other overheads. They can also choose and fundraise for extra equipment as and when they require and make their own arrangements for grass cutting and general maintenance.
All parishes in Hambleton already do this. As a parish councillor I have never heard any complaints.
Get real, residents of Richmondshire, and allow the district to spend money where it is really necessary.
SUSAN LATTER Scruton, Northallerton.
