Sir, – It is a sad reflection on today’s society when one of your correspondents (D&S letters, Oct 12) places greater value on the state of her car than she does on a person’s life.

To believe that all drivers will behave like your correspondent and drive more slowly through the village without the bumps is stretching one’s imagination to the limit.

When the bumps were first installed average speeds dropped by 10mph and casual roadside observation convinces me that this speed has immediately returned.

Before the bumps were installed accidents were a regular occurrence, including one fatality.

The bumps must be reinstated at the earliest opportunity before there is another accident.
