THE second round of the League Challenge Cup last Sunday did not produce too many shocks, although second division Travaux FC gave Broughton Hibs from Division One an almighty scare.

Gavin Armstrong gave the Division Two side an early lead and they felt they should have had two penalties, but Steven Kelly brought the Hibs level and it finished 1-1 after extra time.

The penalty shoot-out went the way of the Division One side as Travaux’s Chris Duckett and Anthony MacIntosh both missed from the spot to give Hibs a 4-2 victory.

Elsewhere, most of the other ties went with the form book.

Kildale, from Division One, eased past Division Three side Northern Dons 5-1. Sean McCaskill headed the Dons into an early lead but Kevin Hugill brought Kidale level before the break, while a second half hattrick from Martin Rogan and a second from Hugill sent them through.

Croft FC also saw off third division opponents, thrashing Masons Arms 8-0. Scott Healey led the way with a four-goal haul, while Mark Flood and Graham Wedge both struck twice in a comfortable Croft victory.

Henleys are also through after a 6-2 win at Streetlam Farmers, from Division Two.

Tom Chapman scored twice for the Farmers but Henleys were rarely troubled as goals from Josh Knox (2), Leon Roberts, Callum Fletcher, Andy Allen and Ben Heugh sent them through.

Blue Star won 5-2 at Brompton FC from Division Three, while Tithe Bar beat Division Two opponents Bar One, 7-4.

The tie was over as a contest inside half an hour as John Bell, Michael Stimson and a brace from Dave Proud put Tithe in control. A Chris Williams penalty and a second from Bell then made it 6-0, but Paul Humphreys reduced the arrears just before half time.

Williams then made it 7-1 early in the second period and Tithe seemed to ease up after that as Humphreys grabbed his second, before late goals from Ben Wood and Stuart Jackson gave the final score some respectability.

In the all-Division One clash at Catterick Village, the hosts eventually beat Colburn Town 8-7 on penalties after the tie had finished goal-less after extra time - Village goalkeeper Karl Lathum scoring the winning penalty.

The top two in Division Two met at the Wensleydale School, with visitors Appleton Wiske coming from behind to win 5-4 after extra time.

Both sides were unbeaten in the league, but it was Leyburn, who reached the final of this competition as a Division Three side last season, who looked set to go through as a hat-trick from Dan Chilton and a strike from Charlie Aliss gave them a 4-1 advantage.

But they tired in the closing stages and goals from Josh Poyner (2), Matty Jones and Dan Jones sent the tie into extra time, where David Shew sent Appleton through.

In another all-Division Two tie, Northallerton WMC overcame Cowtons 7-3. Amazingly it was 2-2 after just ten minutes as Wayne Thompson and Ross Hodgson both scored for the Workies, while Gerry Metcalfe and Mark Sims replied for Cowtons.

Sims then put Cowtons ahead at the break, but Michael Stevens, a brace from Daniel Baxter, a second from Hodgson and a goal from Chris Smailes sent the Workies through.

Three Coopers also overcame fellow Division Two opponents, AFC HIllside, 4-1.

Alan Beatie scored twice in the opening ten minutes before Charlie Marsh made it safe before the break. Beatie then completed his hat-trick in the second period as Coopers eased through.

Brompton-on-Swale were on the wrong end of a shock as they crashed out 2-1 at Division Three strugglers Osmotherley Rangers – a goal from Lee Wasden not proving to be enough to prevent an early exit for Brompton.

Ainderby SC had no such problems, thrashing Vale of York from Division Three 10- 2. Will Stevenson struck a fivegoal salvo, while John Wood also scored a hat-trick as Ainderby dominated throughout.

Gareth Lumley and a penalty from Kyle O’Gorman completed the rout.

There were two all-Division Three ties and both went with the form book. Leaders Topcliffe won 4-0 at Farmers Arms with goals from Ollie Spence (2), Luke Burnett and Matthew Eckersley, while County Arms beat Jolly Minister 4-2.

Dan Nicholson scored inside the opening minute, while Matty Fowler and Nicholson made it 3-0 by the half-hour mark. Matty Carrick missed an opportunity to pull a goal back for the Ministermen when he failed to score from the spot, and Steve Taggart made it 4-0 shortly afterwards.

Stan Parry did hit a brace before the break to revive Minister hopes, but County saw the game out in the second half to make it into the third round draw.

There was only one game played in Division One and it ended in controversy with defending champions Sportsmans FC leading Stokesley SC 2-1.

Jimmy Greening had given Stokesley the lead before a brace from Aaron Ramsbottom either side of the break put the Sporties in front. But Stokesley had a player sent off just past the hour-mark and the referee was forced to abandon the match after the reaction from the Stokesley contingent on the sidelines.

There was no such drama in Division Three where West Tanfield moved up to second place with a 2-0 victory at Station Hotel.

Elsewhere, Golden Lion, Romanby and Masham fought out a 2-2 draw.
