For the second year in succession, Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers entered two teams in the Cleveland Way Relays over 110 miles.
Beginning in Filey at 5am and finishing in Helmsley with fish and chips at the end as a reward – Tom Levi did this distance on his own a couple of weeks ago.
Nicky Jenkins started for the B team, and legs of between about five and about ten miles were completed, with people running in twos or threes. Underfoot conditions were mostly good, though a strong headwind a lot of the way, but especially on the coast and fells such as Roseberry Topping, made life more difficult.
Generally, people had done the route beforehand, but this didn’t prevent one or two of them losing their way on occasion. Team captain Rosie Gatenby covered a couple of legs owing to someone dropping out, and accompanied Beth Haggath on the final stretch from Sutton Bank to Helmsley, enabling Beth to knock a full 17 minutes off her PB for 10k.
A real team-building event, and hopefully, members will be all set for another, the next HDSRL fixture at Ilkley.
