CULLINGWORTH trials rider Phil Disney, ranked as an intermediate grade competitor in Yorkshire, defeated all the experts in the Wetherby Motor Club's annual Tetley Trophy Trial at windswept Fellbeck in the sixth round of the Yorkshire Centre championship series.
After many years out of the sport, Disney came back just over a year ago and immediately made a huge impact in local events.
The trial clashed with the Colin Appleyard ACU British Championship event in South Wales, but Haworth all-rounder Wayne Braybrook, Silsden's James Lampkin and Richmond rider John Sunter were all hot favourites.
Braybrook, a Scott Trial winner, was level on penalties with Disney on the three-lap, 14-section course, but the tie-breaker sorted out Disney as the winner.
Intermediate Danny Cockshott had a stunning ride to edge out Barnard Castle prison officer Martin Bayles and Andy McLoughlin, while West Witton teenager Richard Sadler won the youth class and was placed fourth overall.
● Michael Brown, from Scarborough, won the second round of the Colin Appleyard ACU Trials Championship in South Wales on Sunday.
Reigning British champion Graham Jarvis finished second, just eight points behind the winner, while 16-year-old Richmond schoolboy Jonathan Richardson won the nonchampionship youth class.
● Brothers Mike and Bryan Kendra moved to Louise and Simon Gill's Moor Farm, near Ouseburn, for a successful charity weekend.
It was a case of 100 riders let loose on a very mild ten-section course on Saturday. The weather was fine and the entry happy.
The breakdown of 30 twinshocks featured some very pristine Fantics, SWMs and Bultacos.
Ten pre-65s turned up, with Duncan Macdonald, of Kirkbymoorside, giving his brand new Ariel a run out.
There were no arguments about the youth class, with Dan Peace turning in single figures to eclipse Ollie Kendra and Steven Cross.
● On Sunday, round two of the British women's championship at Lincoln is the target for local girls Katy Sunter, Harriet Peacock, Robyn Alderson, Chloe and Hannah Richardson, Kate Hunter and Nikita Smith.
● Iveston and Satley MC were forced to cancel their Blue Barns meeting at Rowley at the eleventh hour after track officials found the paddock area waterlogged.
A full entry of 130 adult and youth quad competitors was scheduled to race at the North- East Centre track near Tow Law.
General secretary Gillian Nixon and committee members of the club tried to contact as many competitors as possible late on Friday afternoon and on Saturday.
The club were faced with a no-win situation and apologised to anyone who made a wasted trip to Rowley.
They will run a meeting at Topcliffe, near Thirsk, on May 11.
