The "Fund the Fence" appeal being run by Guisborough Town was given a £5,000 boost by a successful fundraising match.
The game, at the KGV Stadium on Saturday, involved various club coaches, plus a few surprise appearances.
This latest contribution to the appeal means the overall total now stands at £27,000 out of the £40,000 needed to cover the cost of the Fence and Pitches project, which is planned to create protected pitches on the neighbouring playing field.
The Coaches versus Coaches event attracted a large crowd, including families and supporters, and the special match between two sides made up mainly of coaches and officials produced a highly entertaining game. The two sides were managed for the day by Laura Whittaker and club chairman Andy Willis.
Andy’s side built up a good 3-1 lead by half-time with two goals from Tom Jeffels and a third from former Boro star and now Guisborough’s head of development, Craig Hignett. In between, Matty Green pulled one back from the penalty spot. In the second half, however, Laura’s coaching team rallied strongly to finish up 5-3 winners.
Guisborough Town’s assistant first team manager Paul Crager, who played in the event, wrote on social media: “Fantastic day at Guisborough Town today – brilliant work from everyone involved – and great to have the support from everybody. Thanks to you all.”
Two Guisborough Town youngsters, Heidi Edwards and Willow Playforth, set a fine example to all ages when they went round the ground, litter picking during the game.
There will be a Sportsman’s evening at the KGV Stadium, on Friday, May 31, featuring an evening with former Boro star David Wheater and ex-Premier League referee Jeff Winter. Guisborough’s head of development Craig Hignett will be the host for the night. Tickets are £20, £18 for members. Call 07722 538164 or e-mail admin@guisboroughtown.co.uk.
