Richmond Motor Club saw the annual Scott Trial event run on Saturday with 170 riders setting off from the Start Field just outside of Marske.
Despite deceivingly clear skies early on in the morning, the air was bitterly cold. A heavy downpour mid-afternoon was the final straw for many riders who decided to call it a day and shiver back to the start field. The riders attempted 76 sections planned out by new Clerk of Course Andrew Swainston and helpers, and covered approximately 87 miles over the day.
Organisers would like to thank previous Clerk of Course Nathan Stones and his team for all their hard work over the years.
Out of the 170 starters, only 69 riders finished the full course within the allowed time.
Spectators were pleased to once again see familiar road racer and TV personality Guy Martin (GasGas) back again to attempt to get further round the course than he did in 2023. Unfortunately for Guy, he didn’t manage it and ended up dropping out at a similar place to last year.
Jonathan Richardson (Montesa) was the first rider home once again and set standard time, completing the course in five hours and 26 seconds, but his observation score of 73 put him in seventh position. Jonathan received the Eddie Flintoff Rose Bowl for creating standard time, as well as a Scott Silver Spoon.
Last year’s winner Jack Price (Sherco) dropped 19 marks on observation, a great result after losing 41 marks on observation 2023.
He raced across the finish line shortly after Jonathan, giving him a score of three on time. This put him into the overall lead on 22 marks lost, claiming his fourth Scott Trial victory in a row and being awarded with the Frank Fletcher Trophy for best score on observation only, the Billy Moore Cup for the best performance by a Yorkshireman born and bred, the Mel Harrison Cup for the best performance by a member of the Yeadon & Guiseley Club, and of course the Alfred Scott Memorial Trophy alongside a Scott Gold Spoon for the overall winner of the 2024 Scott Trial.
Jack’s score, alongside low scores from Jack Peace (Sherco) and Harry Turner (Sherco) meant that the Sherco Team won the Scott Trophy for a trade team of three riders on the same make of machine entered by a manufacturer’s agent.
Local rider Richard Sadler (Vertigo) kept a low score on observation throughout the day, finishing with 23 marks on observation. A score of 13 marks on time, totalling 36 marks, put Richard in second place.
Richard was pleased to also receive the Jubilee Trophy for the best performance on time and observation in the Scott Trial between the years 2019-2024. Billy Green (Scorpa) was just behind him on 24 marks lost on observation and 12 marks on time, landing him third place overall.
Newcomer Arnau Farré (Sherco) was pleased to receive the Herbert Scott Cup for the best performance by a first timer, losing 65 on observation and 87 on time, giving him a total score of 152. The Spaniard found the day tough and cold, but managed to also bag himself a Scott Silver Spoon after finishing in 18th place.
In fourth place was Harry Hemingway (Beta), who once again also received the T Cowie Trophy for the best performance by a rider under the age of 21. The Eric. S. Myers Trophy awarded to a team of three individually entered riders, not on the same make of machine and entered by a club, was again won by the “Yeadon & Guiseley A Team”, comprising of Jack Price (Sherco), Harry Hemingway (Beta) and Alfie Lampkin (Vertigo).
Jack Peace (Sherco) finished in fifth place, losing 35 marks on observation and 23 marks on time. Jack was also awarded the Whitaker Trophy for the best performance by a member of the Scarborough & District Motor Club.
Alice Minta (Scorpa) was awarded with the MHT Trophy for the best performance by a female rider, finishing with 119 marks on observation and 104 marks on time; total score 223.
The local riders were once again out in force, with Guy Kendrew (Beta) securing the Richmond Motor Club Trophy for the best performance by an RMC Expert rider.
Ryan Brown (Beta) won the Nigel Birkett Cup for the best performance by an RMC Intermediate rider and his brother Josh Brown (Beta) clinched the Richmondshire District Council Trophy for the best performance by a Richmondshire resident. Callum Fowler (Beta) was awarded the Mill Garage Cup for the best performance by an RMC Novice rider and Jack Stones (Vertigo) took the Alan Longfield Trophy for the best performance by a local rider.
Richmond Motor Club’s Scott Trial Committee would like to thank everybody involved in the mammoth task of organising and running the event. The club is indebted to the landowners who allow the event to run over their land each year. Organisers also thank the 2024 Scott Trial main sponsor L & A Dent Game Dealers Ltd, and to everyone who has supported the trial in 2024.
