ON THE moors high above Gargrave, another biking conflict will settle the Colin Appleyard ACU British Trials Championship.
This final event in the seven round series will be a cliff-hanger as Graham Jarvis and Michael Brown go head to head for the title.
Just a single point separates Jarvis from Brown, and the former wants to retain his title.
One man alone can really upset the applecart – Dougie Lampkin.
The Silsden international has contested one round this year, the Yeadon-Guiseley club’s Mackenzie Trophy at Pateley Bridge, which he won, easily.
Seventeen-year-old Jack Challoner requires a win in the Expert class, and for title leader Joe Baker no higher than a sixth place finish. A tall order for the local youth. Skeeby’s Jonathan Richardson aims to win the Youth class.
This weekend sees the elite of the clubmen riders converge on the picturesque East Coast between Whitby and Scarborough, where the popular East Yorkshire Two Day Trial will be held. Clerk of course Pat Galway and his assistants have plotted a course that caters for every level of ability.
The route will take in old favourites such as The Riggs and Ruswarp Gully on Saturday, then Ravens Gill, Harwood Dale and then with stamina at a low ebb, the often dramatic finale over the last difficult group of sections at Caravan Hill to finish.
The big names are Simon Kershaw, David Pye, Tom Hick, James Carr, Andy Chilton, Adam Milner and visitors James Noble, Rob Loney and Richard Allen. Katy Sunter and Emma Bristow will pose a major threat.
Both girls are fresh from a world female trial in Andorra last week where the both rode well in world class ranks.
● Almost 70 riders tested the brand new and revamped trials sections on Sunday at Low North Park after Scarborough’s ever active “Slave Gang” had toiled for weeks to re-establish many of the east end hazards by rebedding rocks, adding new hardware and doing a Titchmarsh on many of the softer sections.
It all suited Simon Kershaw right down to the ground, especially when the student/ estate manager/ financier/ Beta breaker won the expert class on a tie-breaker from Whitby’s hotshot Andy ‘Bou’Chilton.
Master Chilton is probably the sharpest teenager riding a Montesa 4RT in the East Yorks Centre and with James Carr trailing just two dabs behind Chilton, the rest were left way behind. Josh Sprintall was next up on his Beta 125 ahead of Phil Mayfield.
● Novogar champion James Fry won the Travers Trial on Sunday for MRS Sherco completing a sensational year in the Novogar series. The Brighton rider lost just eight marks on the one-lap, 40-section course.
Former title holder Chris Pearson and Sunderland’s John Crinson provided intense challenges, while Northallerton’s Philip Kettlewell was seventh ahead of Wallsend teenager Dale Robson. Askrigg motor engineer Philip Alderson took the Over 40s class from Hartlepool car upholsterer Gary Pears, while only Dan Thorpe and Liam Walker contested the Expert class.
● Haworth rider Phil Disney won the Huddersfield Falcon club’s annual A & A Westerby trial at Cartworth Moor on Sunday, beating Harrogate rider Danny Gamble and Skipton expert Aran Drachenberg. Richmond youth Gavin Lowther won the novice class and finished overall sixth.
