THERE were mixed fortunes for the league’s clubs in the North Riding Challenge Cup last Sunday, with three going through and three going out.

Henleys staged a remarkable late comeback to beat Ironopolis FC from Middlesbrough, 4-2. Trailing 2-0 early in the second half, Henleys began the turn around when Leon Roberts scored on the hour.

Josh King then equalised with 12 minutes left and then Roberts grabbed his second in the 88th minute before Callum Fletcher completed the comeback in stoppage time.

Robert Thompsons also left it late to beat visitors Riverside Rovers 4-3. Early goals from Alex Karvounis and Dan McCalmont looked to have set Thompsons up for a win, but it took a brace from Ben Morgan, the second of which came ten minutes from time, to send Thompsons through.

Osmotherley FC needed a last-minute goal to beat Lakes United in an 11-goal thriller. Lakes grabbed an early two-goal advantage, but an own goal put Ossie back into it after half hour. Lakes added a third before the break, but Ossie were transformed in the second half as goals from Craig Melrose, Richard Buller and Jonathan Bishop put them ahead with 20 minutes left. Lakes equalised five minutes later, but Buller grabbed his second to make it 5-4. The tie appeared to be heading to a penalty shoot-out when Lakes equalised again three minutes from time, but Rich Bowden popped up with the last-gasp winner to send Ossie through.

Streetlam Farmers were on the wrong end of thrilling tie as they crashed out 4-3 to Lakes SC, while Osmotherley Rangers were thrashed 5-0 by Clarendon Hotel, and Three Coopers lost 7-1 at West Pier from Scarborough.

Phil Parker scored their consolation just before half time.

In Division One, Northallerton Police hit top form with a 10-3 victory at Croft FC.

Mark Flood gave the hosts an early lead but the Police had turned it around by half time with goals from Gary Shardha, Chris Pattison and Chris Walker.

Pattison and Walker then scored again early in the second period, before Croft briefly rallied with goals from Mark Swanwick and Lee Hammond.

But the Police were not finished as Sam Vernalls struck twice – the second of which came from the penalty spot – Shardha hit his second, while Adam Hodgson and Pattison, to complete his hat-trick, brought up double figures.

Blue Star won 4-2 at second-placed Kildale. Dave James equalised an early Thomas Nichols goal for Kildale, but the hosts lead again at the break thanks to Kevin Huggill.

However, a brace from Tom James turned the match in Star’s favour, before Liam Cook sealed the points five minutes from time.

Broughton and Kikby Hibs fought out a 3-3 draw with visitors Catterick Village.

Brett Roberts, Paul Storey and Alex Dougall were all on target for Hibs, but a brace from Josh Wooff and a strike from Robbie Lister ensured Village left with a point.

Division Two leaders Appleton Wiske maintained their 100 per cent league record with a 3-2 win at Northallerton WMC.

Wayne Thompson gave the Workies an early advantage, but Rory Dodds brought the leaders level by the break.

Dodds scored again within five minutes of the restart to give Appleton the lead, but Ross Hodgson brought the hosts level ten minutes from time and they looked set to grab a point.

But Appleton would not be denied a fifth straight league victory and Danny Jones grabbed the winner in the closing stages.

Leyburn All-Stars are second after a 6-1 win at Knayton. Early goals from Ash Lytolis and Matt Chilton set Leyburn on their way, although Ron Wake pulled one back for Knayton after half an hour.

But Adam Gray made it 3-1 at the break, while second half goals from Steve Butterworth, James Stanger and Lytolis again completed the scoring.

Cowtons are up to third after a 6-0 victory at Bar One who had started the day above them.

A goal from Gerry Metcalfe was all that separated the sides at the break, but Cowtons found their best form in the second half.

Mark Sims was unstoppable as he scored four times in half an hour, while Jimmy Muir was also on target to complete the rout.

Ainderby SC remain in the top four after beating visitors Brompton-on-Swale, 5-0.

Will Stevenson, John Wood and Kyle O’Gorman ended the match as a contest before the break, while Roy Smith and an O’Gorman penalty sealed the points in the second half.

The Ship were given that sinking feeling as they lost 3- 1 at Travaux FC. A first half brace from Gav Rogers put the hosts in control, but Rory Atkinson reduced the arrears within three minutes. Pete Hurry grabbed a third for Travaux ten minutes from time.

Topcliffe still lead the way in Division Three after a 13-1 thrashing of Brompton FC made it 50 goals from their opening five matches.

Second-half goals from James Wallace and Oliver Gorman were not enough as second-placed Farmers Arms crashed 6-2 at home to Station Hotel, while West Tanfield moved up third after a 5- 1 home success against Masons Arms.

County Arms are up to fourth after a 6-2 win at Northern Dons and Golden Lion, Romanby won 5-2 at Jolly Minister.

Elsewhere, Vale of York beat bottom-side Masham 5- 1.
