Hip hip hooray!
Does the birthday hype wear off as you get older?
Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! And so on. The song is quite hard to forget. With its repeating lyrics and exclamations of cheer at the end. But does the novelty of celebrating your birthday start to deteriorate as time goes on?
I know my parents don’t seem to care that much about their birthdays - ‘I don’t want anything’ or ‘It’s okay’. Yet whenever my birthday rolls around, I’m jumping around the room, although the bittersweet taste of turning 18 did fight back on my birthday.
Is it just down to feeling a sense of youth and lack of responsibility fade away that makes birthdays feel more like doomsday?
Well, we shouldn’t let it. What’s not to love about birthdays? There’s friends and family, balloons and most importantly cake!
I know it’s easier said than done, but birthdays are celebrated for a reason - because you’ve made it another year and that is something that should be celebrated, shouted from the rooftops even.
Life is a precious thing and sometimes we forget. But birthdays can be a lovely reminder of the time we have spent on this planet, so don’t downplay the joy of celebrating it. Happy birthday!
