Locals travelling home at peak rush hour were shocked to witness a freak collision between a bus, car and bus stop.
At 4:45pm on October 15th, as the bus came around Trimdon Avenue corner it had a small encounter with an oncoming car clipping its bumper causing the driver to instinctively swerve left to avoid further damage, resulting in the bus butting heads with the Hall Drive West End stop.
Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, whilst an ambulance crew surveyed the injuries sustained by all involved, police cars blocked traffic flow to keep the public safe from the array of glass shattered in the surrounding area.
It has been confirmed by the North Eastern Ambulance Service that no passengers were escorted to hospital as no severe injuries were sustained.
Police proceeded to tape off the strip of Acklam road that was affected meaning no cars could pass through in either direction.
This caused queues of agitated drivers backed up down Hall Drive as officers redirected cars.
Around 5:50pm the line of cars reached lengths of 0.6 miles, all the way back to Outwood Academy.
At 6:05pm the ambulance still lingered in the taped off area and police still remained, communicating with oncoming traffic.
At this point, servicemen arrived at the scene aiming to clear the remains of the bus and its conjoined stop to restore Acklam road to its former functionality.
A further two hours later, via the AA traffic map the flow seemed to return to normal as the road was opened again by police.
The Hall Drive West End stop continues to function as normal as buses still collect passengers in the allotted yellow-marked area however the Trimdon Avenue corner is left with a bus shelter shaped hole.
Who knows when it will be whole again?
Perhaps this is an implication that rush hour traffic needs to be diffused in this area to maintain the safety of our streets for all pedestrians and drivers.
